Sixteen

With an open hand, Greta gestured toward the obsidian bowl on the altar. It was wide and shallow, like the chip bowl Romeo’s dad had kept filled in the center of his kitchen table when they were kids. Lily forced that image aside.

“This,” Greta said, “is the Weiyan—the conjunction of all the magic drawn from our donors. It will be collected here and redistributed when the spell is finished.”

“Redistributed.” Lily scoffed. “To all the Black Heron members, you mean.”

“Not all of them.” Carmichael ran his finger around the edge of the pristine, shining bowl. “My most trusted first, of course. As well as myself. And yes, before you ask, I have experienced this spell on a much smaller scale so I know what to expect. Which is why I’ve put so much thought into how we’ll perform the much larger Transference spell with as little danger as possible for everyone involved.”

She definitely didn’t miss the much more obvious twitch of his eyelids around the white glass orb where his other eye used to be. I bet that’s how he lost it. She had to look away from him, and her attention focused on the manacles and chains bolted to the walls around the chamber. “There are only ten.”

“Ten what?”

“Ten sets of prisoner’s chains.” Her nostrils flared when she said it. “Do you really expect me to believe that you’ll draw magic from ten people to fuel this spell and give enough to your few dozen members? That any of you will be satisfied with only a fraction of someone else’s magic?”

He sent her the predatory smile again and lowered his head slightly to look at her from beneath darkened brows. “No. I don’t expect you to believe that. And none of us would be satisfied with the magic that remains in the equation you so eloquently described. Our donors, the ten who will be stationed around us when it’s time, will only power the Transference spell. The magic itself will come from somewhere else entirely.”

“Where?” Her mind immediately went to the temple at Ichacál—the place that was supposed to be a haven for magicals seeking sanctuary from the outside world. Countless magicals had been locked in cages beneath the temple’s foundations, their magic siphoned out of them by the Wisemen posing as hosts and healers and guides while they worked with the Black Heron Society instead.

“That will be revealed to you the next time you and I stand in this room together. Which we will, Lily. One way or another.” His gaze trailed slowly across the altar and over all the items laid out there in preparation for the spell she was willing to do anything to stop.

“This is the best thing for all of us, Lily.” Greta finally looked up from the table and met her daughter’s gaze. She stepped closer to the man and placed one hand on his shoulder like they were old friends. “It’s time for you to stand with us to do what must be done.
